Alar (Nostril) Reduction
A 20–30 minute refinement that narrows wide nostrils and balances the nose base — subtle change, big difference

Overview
Alar reduction narrows nostrils that flare too wide or a nasal base that spreads beyond the ideal proportion — roughly the width between the inner corners of the eyes. It is a short, precise procedure with an outsized effect on facial balance.
DU designs the excision along the natural alar crease so the fine scar hides in the fold, removing just enough tissue to balance the base without distorting the nostril shape or airflow. It is performed alone or as the finishing touch of a full rhinoplasty.
Why Alar (Nostril) Reduction at DU
- Incision hidden in the natural alar crease — scar becomes nearly invisible
- Conservative excision preserves natural nostril shape and breathing
- 20–30 minutes under sedation with about a week of recovery
- Frequently combined with tip work for complete lower-nose harmony
Recommended for
- Nostrils that flare wide when smiling or at rest
- Nasal base wider than the distance between the eyes
- A bulbous lower nose that makes the face look heavier
- Rhinoplasty patients wanting the base balanced in the same operation

Alar (Nostril) Reduction — FAQ
Will there be a visible scar?
The incision follows the crease where the nostril meets the cheek; once matured it is very difficult to see, and scar care guidance is provided.
Can it be reversed if too much is removed?
Removed tissue cannot be replaced, which is why DU deliberately errs conservative — enough for balance, never so much that the nostril distorts.
Does it change my breathing?
No — the excision is external soft tissue; the airway is untouched.
Alone or with rhinoplasty?
Both are common. Alone it is a quick refinement; combined, it completes the proportions of a new bridge and tip.
